BECOME AN FTLO
TRIP LEADER
About the role
As a Trip Leader for FTLO Travel, you are there to keep the good vibes flowing and to help create incredible once-in-a-lifetime experiences for the FTLO community. Additionally, you’ll make sure that every aspect of the trip runs smoothly, help troubleshoot issues should any pop up, communicate with the Operations team to ensure that all reservations and client details are submitted to appropriate stakeholders, and help provide a safe and inclusive environment for all of our travelers.
Typical day for a trip leader
(Just kidding, there are no typical days!)
Each day of each trip is a new adventure and is designed to be an eye-opening and exciting experience for our travelers. The range of activities we offer on our trips is vast and therefore fairly difficult to describe them as “typical.” Some days start early and some days end late. Some do both and others do neither! You will be provided a full hour-by-hour itinerary before the start of the trip that gives you all the information you will need to be successful, including meeting locations, relevant contact people, and phone numbers.
FAQ
How old do I have to be?
Our groups are geared toward young professionals 25 - 39 years old, and, in general, it is ideal for our customers to have a Trip Leader who fits that profile, but we welcome applications from all ages.
Do I need any prior trip-leading experience?
Preferably yes. Our ideal candidates have previously led tours or group trips.
What qualifications do I need?
We require all trip leaders to go through FTLO Leader training and complete the most relevant and up-to-date Health & Safety training courses, including but not limited to a CPR & First Aid course administered by an internationally recognized provider (e.g., American Red Cross). Based on local regulations in our destinations, we may require that candidates hold a tour guide license.
Can I choose where and when I work?
Personal preferences, language skills, availability, and country-specific experience will be considered when placing Trip Leaders onto trips, and our top-rated Leaders will get the first right of refusal for any specific itinerary. The FTLO Operations Team is constantly juggling the work schedules to ensure that every departure has an available trip leader on call, and we are constantly adding more dates and new trips to the website, so there will likely be ample opportunity. The destination you will be assigned to will be based on your experience, level of expertise, and customer feedback.
Do I need to speak other languages?
While it isn’t a requirement, it is helpful, and Trip Leaders may be prioritized to countries where they speak the predominant language. Additionally, we encourage all trip leaders and customers to learn as much of the local language as possible when traveling.
I want to host trips in my home country. Is that possible?
Absolutely, we have a strong preference for local trip leaders. Prospective trip leaders need to have the latest information on the coolest secret hangouts and the best local restaurants and provide experiences similar to the locals. This also helps us promote local businesses, keep resources in the local economies, and reduce our carbon footprint.
How much do I get paid?
Trip Leaders get paid a day rate per full trip work day. Your pay is based on your experience level, with a chance to increase your salary through happy customers and favorable reviews. The compensation package includes all on-trip accommodation, travel to the trip's starting point, participation in all pre-planned group activities, and a food stipend.
How often are the trips?
The demand for each particular destination determines the frequency of trips. We aim to run several trips throughout the year for each of our itineraries, each led by a qualified Trip Leader.
Will I be able to choose which trips I lead?
The Operations team will do their best to match you with the itineraries you are most qualified for. If you have specialized knowledge of a particular country where we offer trips, please let us know and we will factor that information into your placement.
Are there any physical requirements that need to be met to lead trips?
Different trips have different requirements in terms of physical fitness. For most trips, you will be required to walk quite a bit each day.
Can I do this alongside my other job or studies?
While on a trip, the responsibilities of a Trip Leader are full-time and thus need to be prioritized like a full-time job. We prefer to have trip leaders that can run many trips a year. If you want to take a week off your full-time job to do this once a year, then this isn’t for you. Depending on your schedule, there may be time to take up other jobs or studies between trips, but we would love for you to do as many trips as you can in a year with us. Regardless, please discuss your schedule with the team so we can plan accordingly.
